I am trying to do a similar thing, but I would like to number each reference number sequentially starting at 1 each time when the account number changes.  I am using for manufacturing though.  Each job will have operations open and within the query I want to number each jobs operation with a sequential number starting at one.  When the job changes then the numbering will begin again.  There is a sequence number for each job operation that sorts it, but it is different for each job so that field I believe can only be used to sort the numbering function.

The other way would be to create bates numbers in Acrobat Pro, like every page numbered, and send this to the printer and print every color individually (that requires boxes of carbonless paper in individual colors) and mixed them somehow..but it would be a pain.

I have exactly this problem. Each month I send out invoices and used this feature to put in my invoice numbers. as Brendakl said, I cleared our any previous numbers, typed in the first two invoice numbers I needed and then just used the down arrow to automatically put in all the rest of the invoice numbers required. My apologies.  I understand now that you’re using the Autofill feature as described in the following KB article.  Despite having worked with Access for quite a number of years, I can’t say that I’ve ever used this feature or seen it used.  Unfortunately, it appears that this feature has indeed been dropped as of Access 2007.  This was reported by a customer previously and it was confirmed that the feature was intentionally dropped, as opposed to some sort of bug preventing it from working correctly.

OK, First, you need to reread the blog. You should NOT be storing the Transaction_ID. It is a calculated value. Second, your naming is what confused me. Your Passenger table should have an autonumber PassengerID. That PassengerID should be the Foreign Key in your Reservations table. Your servation table should also have an autonumber for ReservationID. I really don’t see why you need sequential numbering in the passenger table. I can understand it in the Reservations table, but not in the passenger table. Also, I don’t see any reason for a transaction date in the passenger table. I can understand a CreateDate for when the passenger signed up.

And even if you have a clearly stated convention that says an approved document must be “something dot zero”, I don’t like the way that the numbers stack up. So, for example, version 1.3 is supposed to be a draft working towards version 2.0, but to my mind the “1” associates it more with version 1.0 than version 2.0.

I know I did it once before but I can’t for the life of me remember how I did it. I have a two part NCR job I need to number. Numbers start at 2001. I need 2001, 2001, 2002, 2002, 2003, 2003, etc. Did it once before but I have no clue how. I think I need an excel file with two banks of identical numbers but after that I get stumped. Master A gets one bank of numbers and Master B gets other bank of identical numbers. So I guess my query is how to get pages to automatically number so that file builds with master A, master B, master A, master B, etc.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I’m a little confused by the Display aspect of this. Artifact ID is a primary key to the table I am working in and I need it to have a unique identifier that other people can search for. The previously adopted naming convention for this ID is that which I mentioned before, Collection Point ID plus a period and then a sequential number restarting at each new Collection Point ID i.e 2-1050.1, 2-1050.2, 2-1060.1 and so on. So I think I actually need to save this in the Artifact ID field. I realize this might be slightly redundant but I’m not sure how the display would work as far as searching for specific Artifact IDs in the future.

I am using your instructions to create a page of tickets – the design has been created as a picture so I added a text box to “hold” the mail merge instructions but I keep getting the error message “You cannot include DATA, NEXT, NEXTIF, or SKIPIF fields in comments, headers, footers, footnotes or endnotes.” I have not included any of these but I’m wondering if it’s because I’ve attempted to insert it in a text box. Is there an easy way to do this? TIA

Hello! I already have automatic numbering set up (to change paragraph numbers automatically when paragraphs are moved within a document) but I would also like to have automatic lettering within the same document that is independent from the numbering. Example, paragraph 1 references Exhibit A, paragraph 2 references Exhibit B, so on and so forth. Currently using the above referenced method, the auto numbering lettering then follows as if the letters are a representation of the corresponding number (if that makes sense), ex: 1 B 3 C 5 D. How do I have the number sequencing independent from the letter sequence? Thank you in advance!

I know that PrintShopMail will do it, but I was wandering if there was a less expensive solution out there so that I could get numbered tickets (usually 4-up) right off the Xerox. I have a field called “Index name” which is displayed as a drop down on the form , this looks up from another list. I need the form/ list to generate a unique  & sequential ID based upon the selected value in this drop down.
