Hello Bruce, I seem to be having a different problem altogether. I created my ticket in word using logos and text boxes as needed, ticket looks great. I followed your very clear instructions but when I did the Finish & Merge I got this message, “You cannot include DATA, NEXT, NEXTIF, or SKIPIF fields in comments, headers, footers, footnotes or endnotes.” I then click on OK and get this, “A field calculation error occurred in record 1. Bruce any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

I normally use “Data Merge” in InDesign and use Excel (or something like it) to generate the list of numbers for me. You would copy the numbers into a text file so that InDesign can read them as the merge data source. Note that you would have one ticket on the page and then let InDesign set the other tickets on the page (you can tell the Data Merge control panel about spacing).

  1. You can use previous versions of Microsoft Excel and Word to make mail merge raffle tickets; the process is similar. For example, in Word 2003, you’ll find Mail Merge under Tools|Letters and Mailings.
    You don’t need to be so much worried about how you will get the prizes to award the winners. In each community there are certain organizations or businesses that recognize the importance and the hustle that one goes through in selling the raffle tickets, these businesses or organizations will be quite instrumental in catering for the prizes. Alternatively you could choose to have a 50/50 raffle which implies that half of the donations or cash will have to be given to the winner of the chosen raffle ticket and the remaining amount will be retained by the organization or group which was responsible for the sale of the raffle tickets. This kind of arrangement is common among the youth and the surrounding community is mostly receptive and helpful to those raising the funds.
