You can use the same feature with Publisher. Although you might not think of Publisher as an Office app, it comes with several different versions of Office. In this article, I’ll show you how to print sequentially numbered tickets using Publisher and Excel. This article provides instructions for Publisher 2007, 2010, and 2013.

Any time you want to produce another batch, open the document, press Ctr-A, then F9 and input the starting Ticket #. Simple. That means that being the same, each number will go into each box so the first ticket will get number 1 and number 1. So you will end up with a 375 page document to create 3000 total tickets based on an 8 up.

I am trying to create raffle tickets, 4 on a page with only a number on the stub. My problem is when I get to the print preview and change it to “multiple pages per sheet” it is just changing the number on the next page and not on the next ticket. I followed all the directions on adding the number to each ticket from the merge document (of course all the step by step information I can find is only for 2007 and NOT 2013 so guessing there is something wrong with what I am doing).  When I go into the print screen it is also changing my paper from 8 1/2 x 11 to 11 x 17 and putting 8 on the page.

I have been through this exact scenario.  It’s a pain unless you can impose them for north-south stacking and cutting.  I ended up having a local printer impose my single-page files, then send me a print quality PDF at my desired page size, then we printed them, and sent them back to the printer to cut.  Worked like a charm and I didn’t week trying to make it work.

i’ve had to do tons of this lately and found that for the amounts of tickets being done (e.g. 7000 x 10 tickets + cover & mailer) that chuckT’s solution almost 2 years ago is similar to what i use. would be interested to know if others doing similar VDP are using a wholly indesign/excel solution, or if specific VDP software such as XMPie are being used.

We use the auto page numbering trick here, the trick is to do it as spreads. You just make your pages the same size as the ticket with crops and bleeds. Then set up the shell on the master page and place your auto page number where you want your numbers. Each pages is the next number. You can also have two sets of numbers for perforated ticket. You then can use the page start options to add to the numbers and keep the same number of total numbers. For example you would do a new page start after number 99. 0001 to 0099 so it doesn’t add two “0’s” to the front of 100 and you get 00100 when you want 0100. Works great for small quantities, we have done up to 1000+ tickets and once you do it once or twice it is a snap to set up. To avoid having to do 1000 pages just send the tickets in groups. Usually between 25 to 100 at a time works good depending on artwork file size. Just save each time before sending to printer and name the file with what the tickets are. Like “MyTickets-0001-0100.Indd”. Makes it easier to go back if you have a problem. You can even do two rolls of tickets if your using 12 x 18 sheets by flipping the sheet and doing one row along the top and one along the bottom on reverse side. That is if your ticket is single Sided. Two sided tickets are a bit trickier. 🙂

Hi – are you creating your own tickets using the instructions on this page? If so, you can of course change the font and everything else in your Word document. If you are using the Raffle Ticket Creator app (app.raffleticketcreator.com) then you can’t change the font size … you’ll just need to tinker with the exact words that you are including in order to get them to fit on the page. My script looks for the object-name and replaces all the numbers at the end of the text-string. Example: TEST010111 start: 9 how long is the number-string? 5 > TEST00009,TEST00010 and so on every marked object with the specified objectname will get the new string. I have another script that places the marked object(s) in a user-sized sheet after editing the quantity X and Y and the space between the objects.

However, on re-opening the Word document, I have the dialogue box Invalid Merge Field. I have to use Task Manager to close down Word. I am using Word 2010. Maybe that is part or all of the problem. Creating a sequential list of numbers, in Word, sounds like an intimidating task. Sure, you can create a numbered list quickly enough, but that feature works with additional text – you’re numbering something. If you want a list of just numbers, you have to work a bit harder. Word’s SEQ field might come to mind, but that solution is better suited to template-type numbering. In order words, this field works great if you’re numbering documents, labels, and so on. It doesn’t work so well if you just want to create a list of sequential numbers. You can use it that way, but it’ll be more work than it’s worth.

That would make sense, but there’s a catch: Autonumbered paragraphs on a master page don’t update until you override them. That is, you have to Command/Ctrl-Shift-click on them to make them “kick in” and update to the correct number.

I followed the instructions exactly but for some reason the numbering is starting at 2 every time. I did deselect the checkbox about the column headers which seems the obvious culprit. Any ideas? You can request us to change the stub ie, instead of Name, Address and Phone ADMIT ONE, name and date of your event. (This is helpful if you are pre-selling your tickets because your seller can retain the stub portion for record keeping. If you prefer no stub, place your order and select “tickets with no stub”. In either case, your proof will show a standard stub but your Admission Tickets will either have no stub or one with the information you requested.

Directions are clear for sure but when i go to merge the first ticket is one but the second number on the raffle ticket is two. i have four raffle tickets per page the first three are http://thedailyrant.net up but the forth is correct all the way down to 500. Any ideas? i have tried with a header and without a header. i even made the first number with a formula. it does work with out putting next record but like you said it is four tickets with the same number and that would use a ton of ink. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got it to work! I modified my spreadsheet and added a header row with the words “Ticket Number” in field A1. Then I left the checkbox checked when I imported the spreadsheet to Word. That seemed to make it happy. THANK YOU!! This was so helpful!!

Easy Numbering 123 is named appropriately. I downloaded the software and tried 1 test job. I printed out a bunch of sample tickets with no problem. It’s just one job, but tickets don’t get to complicated so it should work for us too.

I work at a quick copy shop as the in house designer. They JUST moved from manual numbering to digital and each job keeps building and getting worse since I brought digital numbering to their attention. I mean it’s super easy if there’s one number but two per ticket and 8 up? It’s hard with limited tools but doable.

You need to create a list of numbers using some method (maybe even through VBA) as a text file, database or other data source, then just insert merge field in the document and use Print Merge to generate multiple labels with different numbers in it. (just need to give it enough space to fit the longest string along as many lines as you think there could be) If I reserve space for 50 chars and the major strings are 25 chars, the result is not professional looking. My solution for all print merge for ID cards (and similarities, incl. Auto numbering) is to merging data BEFORE printing, in an CDR file with all pages. So, I check all the cards and I correct only on text object how need. Thanks very much for your prompt reply, which reassured me that I was on the right path. From having read various Help topics, I suspected that I’d have to use an Excel data source for the numbers. Fortunately, my knowledge of Excel was good enough to know about the drag and drop facility to create automatic sequential numbering, so the data source creation was easy. In the end, it was the mail merge (no surprises?) which proved a tad tricky, but I got there in the end. I’ve used MM many times and quite happily in Word documents, but for Publisher label format, it was of course a bit different. The important bit that I had to discover for myself was the significance of, after getting to the Print stage, going into Print options, to Publication & Paper Settings, and selecting Multiple Pages per Sheet (& in my case, also “Single-sided” cos my default of duplex printing had come up). But TA-DA!  All is fine now. Thanks very much again.

Now, you’ll define the actual merge values. In this case, it’s the Ticket Numbers field in the selected Excel workbook. Drag the Ticket Numbers field from the merge pane to the document (Figure G). After dropping the field control, I pressed [Enter] to replace Microsoft with the <> field.

It depends what the design is for the tickets. But if you set up primary text frames, linked for the area for the numbers, you can create a numbered list with the numbering format you want. Then, just pour in a whole load of paragraph returns that have that numbered list applied. And make sure each numbered paragraph is set to start in the next column.

The tickets were printed exactly as ordered and arrived on the day they were scheduled to. We are very happy again with the high quality nature of the printing and the material the tickets are printed on, even with choosing the least expensive options. We’ll be back next time we need tickets!

Print using a template.[4] If you’re printing over a computer, you don’t need to design the tickets from scratch. There are templates specifically designed for raffle draws. Look up one of these templates and print rows and columns of them onto as many printer sheets as you need. You can take the image and type the necessary information as needed via a Word processor. Print off a sheet and have it ready.

I would like to number a voucher book, i have place 4 vouchers on a page, the thing is that i want each of these vouchers to start with different number, 100, 200, 300, 400, and then i want to number them 99 times. The problem is that they have to be numbered only 1 per page, so that when i have printed them all i can easily crop them and staple them right up with having to go through it all.

Measure out your tickets. If you are keeping your raffle fairly small (>50 people), it is just as easy to write up the tickets all by hand. Good morning! Directions are clear for sure but when i go to merge the first ticket is one but the second number on the raffle ticket is two. i have four raffle tickets per page the first three are messed up but the forth is correct all the way down to 500. Any ideas? i have tried with a header and without a header. i even made the first number with a formula. it does work with out putting next record but like you said it is four tickets with the same number and that would use a ton of ink. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. On the first hand, you need to initiate Microsoft Publisher. You can view a magnifying glass icon and you need to hit inside the little field which shows Available Templates page. Now you should type the Word ‘tickets’ and move your cursor towards the magnifying glass icon. Hit on it. Subsequently you need to evaluate and assess the ticket options in the Microsoft Publisher. After that you can double click on the desired template. For example if you want to open the raffle ticket template just double click on it for the Publisher to open it for you.

In the example I explained, I was using a list, but did it with un-linked text boxes using “continue from previous number” and “continue numbers across stories.” I’m guessing that there is no way to tell InDesign that even though there are 4 text boxes on the page, that there are two different lists? I’d probably have to just create two threaded stories for that scenario to work.

Is there a script out there that you can define the font, size and numbering sequence for Corel? I work for a real estate company and I have to cut 0-500 in various sizes and increments. Sometime the numbers will always end in a Letter (A) or even end with the same numer ( 5001, 5011, 5021, 5031) and so on.

If the numbers appear to be cut off, adjust the formatting and layout of your publication. For example, you may need to increase the size of the text box that contains the data field for your tracking number, or you might need to decrease the font size of the data field.

Thanks very much for your prompt reply, which reassured me that I was on the right path. From having read various Help topics, I suspected that I’d have to use an Excel data source for the numbers. Fortunately, my knowledge of Excel was good enough to know about the drag and drop facility to create automatic sequential numbering, so the data source creation was easy. In the end, it was the mail merge (no surprises?) which proved a tad tricky, but I got there in the end. I’ve used MM many times and quite happily in Word documents, but for Publisher label format, it was of course a bit different. The important bit that I had to discover for myself was the significance of, after getting to the Print stage, going into Print options, to Publication & Paper Settings, and selecting Multiple Pages per Sheet (& in my case, also “Single-sided” cos my default of duplex printing had come up). But TA-DA!  All is fine now. Thanks very much again.

Create a text frame on the Master page, while dragging, split the frame horizontally and vertically using arrows on the keyboard (Gridify your frame), this way all frames are threaded, you may do the same on both pages of the Masters (Spread) but make sure you link last frame of left Master page and first text frame of right Master page.

I would love to have a script where I could define the numbering sequence and also define if it ends with a letter or number. Also define it to fit in a certain height. Our plotter can cut to a max of 24.75′.

I basically used Bob Levine’s method (thanks) but wanted to add some extra detail – am using CS2 which is somewhat behind CS3 in this area. I to, have read through your directions while using both mac & pc platforms. I fail to find the “standard features” screen shots that you show above in either program. I too have spent several hours trying to get the sequential 3-up numbering as described.

Create the sample label so that it has the word Exhibit followed by a merge field that represents the number being pulled from the Excel worksheet. Make sure the label contents are formatted the way you need them.

Click that, and a placeholder will appear where your cursor was, which will later insert the ticket number at that point. Do that twice for each ticket (once for the counterfoil, once for the main ticket). You should end up with something like this:

My script looks for the object-name and replaces all the numbers at the end of the text-string. Example: TEST010111 start: 9 how long is the number-string? 5 > TEST00009,TEST00010 and so on every marked object with the specified objectname will get the new string. I have another script that places the marked object(s) in a user-sized sheet after editing the quantity X and Y and the space between the objects.

Create a master frame in ID to hold the number and if I have more than one ticket on a page just link the frames. Apply a paragraph style that starts in a new frame for the numbers. Place the text file with a shift click and the numbers are formatted and the new pages are autoflowed. The number list is very easy to create in Excel with the auto fill feature for that type of thing.

I have done this twice now, getting flustered. The ticket part the person keeps has the correct sequential number on it, but the side that we keep has the same number on it for the whole page. What part am I missing, at first I did not uncheck the box, but this time I did but have the same number on the stub side that we keep with the person’s name, etc

it can be done with almost any software that has print merge function (we use corel draw a lot for such jobs). you create a excel file with numbers, and merge them into design. once you learn it it is easy and fast.

The raffle ticket paper is pre-numbered and pre-perfed and is available in two different sizes (Large Tickets – 2 3/4″ x 8 1/2″, Small Tickets – 2 1/8″ x 5 1/2″) with 20 different paper colors for each size.

Right now I’m making a straight sequence of numbers (two to a ticket). There are 3000 tickets (3001-6000 for an example) so my numbered list is double that since there are two to a ticket. Right now my flow is this:

Create your first ticket, without the numbering. Then where you want the number to appear first, press Ctrl-F9 to create a pair of field braces (ie ‘{}’) and fill in between them so that you get ‘{SEQ Ticket \# 00000}’. Then, where you want the duplicate number to appear, create another field and fill it it so that you get ‘{SEQ Ticket \c \# 00000}’. From there it’s mostly just a matter of duplicating the whole ticket however many times you want. When you’re done press Ctrl-A to select the whole document, then press F9 to update the fields.
