They are entered when adding a document, checking in a document, or at any time the document metadata is edited in the document management system. These numbers are updated when you sort them with your data. The sequence may be interrupted if you add, move, or delete rows. You can manually update the numbering by selecting two numbers that are in the right sequence, and then dragging the fill handle to the end of the numbered range.

Fraud detection has a touch more glamour to it. SPSS, another data-analysis firm, uses algorithms to scrutinise customer data and to build propensity scores that predict how people will behave. One of its clients is ClearCommerce, which provides payment-processing services to online merchants. SPSS helped ClearCommerce to build a system that looks at a customer’s past transactions and learns what hints at fraud—it might be the amount of money being spent, the shipping details and the time of day, and so on. Transactions then get a fraud-propensity score based on these characteristics; merchants decide which scores should ring alarm bells and how to respond.

The method below was inspired by code developed by fellow MVP Doug Robbins and reproduced in a web page he developed for the now defunct MVP FAQ site. The number sequence is stored in an editable text file called Settings.ini which is stored here in the Word startup folder and displayed by a docvariable field inserted in the header by the macro.

A version control field can have an optional prefix, but it doesn’t have to be unique.
The macro defaults to one more than whatever number is already in F12, ending 10 forms further on. So, if you save the workbook after printing, or you simply run the macro again before closing the workbook, the next sequence will offered the next time you start the workbook. If you’d prefer a different default sequence length, simply change the ’10’ in the macro.
Document and Version Control Numbers are essentially special metadata fields. You can use one or both types of control numbers in a schema. If multiple document schemas use the same Document or Version Control Field, they are subject to the same numbering scheme. If schemas use separate Document or Version Control numbering schemes, then separate Document or Version Control numbers should be created and applied to the appropriate schema. The following screen shot shows both Document and Version Control numbers being applied to the schema.
Start writing the text for the numbers. In this case, I typed ticket “nr.” Leave any numbers out. This will be filled in by the data file. As you can see, the text box wraps around the full tickets with crop marks.
Another noteworthy point is that incase you are trying to apply a uniqueness constraint on the project document numbering scheme, you have to be prepared to live with the fact that there will be holes (Some numbers initially used – but later the documents were dropped) in the final set of documents that you will get. For example – it is possible to have a case where after the document number DOC-1 you may at the end of the project get a document with document number DOC-3 with document with document number DOC-2, initially was there but perhaps was dropped during the subsequent development.
My issue is trying to create small dot labels or equivalent to make up sequential alpha numeric labels to identify each individual item that I have in my shop, retrospectively. I have possibly 6-8thousand individual items that need coding for stock take purposes yet I can find no outlet that supply such thing. Do you have any suggestions. My line is antiques/collectables, predominantly china with items ranging in size from 2-3cm to 5/600cm. I would be most grateful for any solutions or suggestions. Best regards. Pete.
