For businesses, the global standard numbering system to identify all types of business organizations, such as corporations, non-profits, and government entities, is the D&B Number or DUNS number. The DUNS Number is a 9-digit number assigned to each business and was created by Dun and Bradstreet back in 1963.
Juan has a sole proprietorship and a business in partnership with Jim. Juan has one BN9 for his sole proprietorship, plus several BN15s for that business. Juan has another BN9 for his partnership with Jim, and that partnership has several (different) BN15s assigned to that partnership. Juan is associated with two BN9s, one for each business, because they have different legal entity And each business has different dealings and accounts with government, so each business has its own set of BN15s.

I’m about to start a business and want to set practical guidelines for our new, pristine online document store (with built in version control). In previous roles I’ve had to grudgingly accept that different situations require different naming conventions, but those apparently choosing the convention seemed to make it up as they went along! Our folder structure will emerge organically, so I’m considering setting a rule that says sub-folders with CAPITALISED names should contain a file with the naming conventions for that branch, whereas folders in Sentence Case should inherit guidelines from the parent (or grandparent) folder. I’ll suggest they read this post and follow Josephine’s link to the excellent guidelines written by Anne Thompson of the University of Edinburgh. I wonder whether this will be empowering … or perhaps just lead to chaos?!

Click Print Preview to check the settings. (Publisher 2010 and 2013 does this automatically.) The ticket numbers should increase by one (Figure K) as they do in the Excel sheet. Publisher will generate enough pages to accommodate your entire list of values in Excel.

The four templates with automatic serial numbering are quite nice and one of them will most likely be suitable for your needs. You can edit them as well. If you’re going to do that, save the original template separately. Doing so will give you a fresh template, in case you need one.
When a single document, using a manually edited Document Control Number, is copied to another folder, an additional page is displayed in the Transfer Wizard, prompting the user to enter the new document number for the copy of the document.
