I’ve described how to do this using Data Merge a number of times, including in post # 6 at I need to number 20,000 tickets in InDesign and have them in order when I cut them where I describe how to do it for stack-cut imposition without a plugin.
We’ll create our Event Programs as single fold documents (a single fold refers to one fold, directly in the center of the printed sheet, meaning a single sheet translates into a 4-page Event Program) so 4-page programs will not be bound. Single fold programs are perfect for small events such as music or dance recitals, school plays or concerts, community variety shows, or other short, local events.
The document management system automatically assigns a unique number to every single document that is added to FileHold. This number called the: FileHold ID Number. This number can be added to the document electronically and (coming soon) even printed on the document.
As there is a uniqueness check – the holes are allowed in the document numbering system and all document number that were assigned are accounted and accessible (with permissions) to the concerned document control teams and their clients.

We recently purchased Fusion Pro Desktop 7.1. I’m having trouble with our first numbering job. We’re printing & numbering 3 part carbonless forms. I have it 2up on 11×17. Each number has to repeat 3 times, then go in sequential order from 26850-28351. So all together it’s 4,500 parts on 2,250 sheets that will be cut in half. So numbers 26850-27600 have to go sequentially through one side of the stack, and numbers 27601-28351 have to go sequentially through the other side of the stack. That way we can just cut it in half & everything can be in order. I know this program can do that, but I must be missing a step. We can cut the paper in half before we send it if necessary, but we’ll be charged twice as many clicks so I’m trying it this way first to save the owner money.
The configuration of official document numbering depends on the relevant application area and country. We strongly recommend that you read the overview of the generic Customizing settings before you make the settings in the system.
Assign invoice numbers in chronological order. For example, format an invoice number generated on an invoice for a customer number 4,072 on June 30, 2017, as 20170630-4072-00. The first series of numbers is the date, the second series of numbers is the customer number and the third series of numbers is the sequential unique identifier for the invoice. If you generate a second invoice on that date for that customer, the invoice number will be 20170630-4072-01. Use any date format you choose. Alternative date formats include 06302017, 120630 and 063012.

These numbers are updated when you sort them with your data. The sequence may be interrupted if you add, move, or delete rows. You can manually update the numbering by selecting two numbers that are in the right sequence, and then dragging the fill handle to the end of the numbered range.
You can enter any piece of text or numbering into the Document Numbering field. For example, if you wanted to have a document number of “Example 1, Example 2, Example 3…” etc., then the Document Numbering field should read as follows: “Example [number]” (without the inverted commas).
Sequence fields are the first method that Word developed for automatic numbering and, in the words of John McGhie, the most robust. They are virtually unbreakable. Here is a link to the Microsoft Office reference page for them in Word 2010. As far as I know, the syntax and the switches have remained unchanged since before Windows.

Understanding outline numbering and how outline numbering interacts with styles is crucial to your success in using Word with legal documents. Basic outline numbering can be handled much the same way as bullets and numbering. Seven default outline numbered lists come with Word. Three of the lists format the paragraphs with outline numbers. These lists are in the top row of the dialog box. The remaining four format the paragraphs with outline numbers and apply heading styles to the paragraphs and can be found in the bottom row.
The last category listed on the chart of accounts is the Expense Category which is usually numbered 5000. A handy way to list expenses in the chart of accounts is to look at Internal Revenue Service Tax Form Schedule C and follow the way expenses are listed on that form. That makes it easy for you and your accountant when tax time comes. Develop an account for each of the expenses listed on Schedule C plus any other expense specific to your firm. Leave several blank accounts available in case you need them in the future. Assign a number in the 5000-5999 range to each.
